Journalist Steve Rothaus covers LGBTQ issues in South Florida. Steve joined the Miami Herald in 1985, while a journalism major at Florida International University.Steve came out at work in 1987 and later served five years as a national board member of NLGJA, The Association of LGBT Journalists. He founded the association's Newsroom Outreach Project and traveled the country visiting newspapers, television stations and college campuses to discuss gay news coverage and workplace issues.Steve was part of a Herald team that shared the 1993 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service (Hurricane Andrew).He won the 1998 GLAAD Media Award for outstanding newspaper columnist.In 2001, Steve was part of a Herald team that shared the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting (Elián González).The Miami-Dade Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce in 2010 named him Business Person of the Year.Equality Florida presented Steve with its 2012 Voice For Equality award. http://hrld.us/1SLAzxiSteve co-produced "The Day It Snowed In Miami: A Chronology of the LGBT-Rights Movement," an Emmy-winning 2014 documentary presented by Miami Herald Media Company and WPBT2. http://hrld.us/DayItSnowedThe Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival presented Steve with its annual Angel Award in 2014.In November 2014, Steve also became the Herald's Neighbors editor.
