As project manager was responsible for various Hewlett-Packard High Performance Computing software projects. These included the Itanium Fortran compiler, the proprietary HPC math library, and the proprietary HP-MPI library.In this project manager position he worked with software development teams in California, Massachusetts, and India. When Convex was acquired by Hewlett-Packard in 1995, these teams did not communicate well, and often worked at cross purposes. Steve worked to mitigate the communication, and time zone differences of the various teams. He found ways to move the products forward in spite of personality and cultural differences.

Compiler developer on Convex Vectorizing Fortran compiler. Worked primarily on low level machine dependent optimizations in the code generator phase of the compiler. Was the project manager for the Convex Vectorizing C compiler. This team leveraged the earlier work of the Convex Vectorizing Fortran compiler. Built a complete product with only three engineers in eighteen months. Was the project manager for the world's first vectorizing Ada compiler, the Convex Vectorizing Ada compiler. Again he lead a small team of four engineers leveraging the work of the Fortran and C compilers. Convex was the first company to be able to run the entire Ada Validation suite in less than 24 hours. Most validations took at least three days of dedicated run time to run all the tests.
