When I had questions while I was working on the help desk he was always quick to respond and assist me. I fondly remember one day when I was still working on the help desk and how he took the time to explain how a tcpdump worked in order to prepare me for a troubleshooting call with a customer. During 2016 I had the pleasure of joining the new DevOps team that was being put together and headed by Steve. He called me in and explained the changes that were happening and asked me if I would like to be folded into it under his leadership. Needless to say I was excited to work under him and get more experience with DevOps technologies and ideas. Over the next few years I learned a lot about what DevOps could and should be and how better to think about the entire software workflow within the company from coding to release. He helped get me into an AWS training event which gave me some much needed familiarity on several technologies I wasn't familiar with to better prepare me for my role. As a manager he avoided micromanagement and gave me a great deal of flexibility in determining what work needed to be done. However, he was always willing to lend a hand and assist me with tasks I was working on. On one particular occasion I was running into issues trying to compile an RPM from source. Steve took the time out of his busy schedule to dig into it and helped document the appropriate steps to take which easily saved me days of reading up on something I was unfamiliar with. Steve was also instrumental in my career growth and pushed me to become a better software engineer. He fought hard to get me more recognition for my work without even asking him which I will always be extremely grateful for. After working under him I realized that Steve deeply cares about the people he works with and is responsible for and anyone would be lucky to get the chance to work with him."
