Apr 2012 - Nov 2014

Operations Engineer @ Microsoft (Gfs)

Redmond, Wa

Supporting Secure Web Services for MS Global Services and SMS. SMS was built on Dynamics AX. the service that managed incoming hardware to 24 of the MSFT data centers. The service managed the inventory, along with all of standard functions of the hardware, like network ports, storage, spare parts, other physical and virtual functionality. It then linked with other infrastructure services that allowed the new hardware to be added to monitoring, managing the physical location as well as providing management functionality to the group that owned it, etc. This service was also in the middle of building the next version on the current version of Dynamics AX 2012R2. I provided backup support for this service when the primary engineer was not available or needed extra help. I was the lead Engineer of a team that supported Global Criminal Compliance (GCC) services. GCC responds to all legal supeonas providing the data and metadata when legally required. Supporting this service was a challenge. It really ran 24/7 with a slow down late in the afternoon M-F, and late Saturday night. Because of legal requirements, the service and everyone interacting with it had to meet specific legal requirements. Limitation forced by the design requirements did not allow for redundancy except for front end servers. I supported the servers, provided workarounds during failures when possible, while the next gen version of the service was completed. Provided operational and support guidance for the next version. Weekend updates had a high risk of unexcepted failures and issues. I requested and was allowed to transitioned the maintence window to mid week. The results were reduced the outages because we had real users doing functionality testing, with the dev and test team if needed. TEK Systems lost the support contract to a lower bidder. The FTE team requested that I stay on an additional month to provide training and documentation before leaving.

Theplatform

Seattle, Wa

Build out and configure application servers for the various thePlatform service offeringsDiscover, collect and document base requirements for each of the server configurationsDeploy patches and updates during maint windowsResponsible for increased interaction between Development team and Operations teamResponsible for implementing the change control processApprox 50% of the servers built out on Windows 2003 servers running JVMs with Jetty or JBoss middleware. 20% running IIS and .NET Web services, remainder running RedHat Enterprise Server or CentOS Enterprise Server JVMs on Jetty. Attended RH course to prepare for RH Certified Technician exam. Scored second highest on exam, better than others with significantly more Linux experience. Started baseline implementations of ITIL configuation management, helped to improve existing base line deployment process.Designed and lead the implementation of a hardware only data partitioning with redundancy using CARP proxy services, This allowed the dev team to continue working on the replacement services without losing time fixing old services. It that decrease the load on the individual middleware servers. This increased response time and decreased outages and support time. The redundancy also allowed for updates with little down time. Implemented a tiered deployment of updates using WSUS services that reduced downtime caused by unexpected changes in updates by updated the dev and test environments prior to updates to the production environments. The improvments in time and ease of use allowed the management and operations of the WSUS service to be transitioned from the ops team to the support team.
