My journey into education has been a highly non-traditional path, as I felt it was important to earn a Bachelors in my specific field, then pursue instructional mastery in my graduate studies. During my undergrad, I felt it was important to work with children in various settings, so I worked in daycares, transitioned to working with at-risk youth populations, then entered the public school sector. My work experience alongside my educational experiences have given me a range of skills most people do not possess. This was an intentional choice, as I knew I would need a range of skills working with all types of students if I was going to be effective in the classroom and at the executive level. Having previously acquired a Bachelors of Arts in English (Rhetoric & Writing) and a Masters of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction (Secondary English), my desire for more knowledge resulted in entrance to the Doctoral Program at UCCS in Educational, Leadership, Research, & Policy, specifically studying Instructional Leadership in Professional Development. I merge my academic studies alongside my work in District 11, creating published, peer-reviewed research leading to personal academic advancement and meaningful data for my current school district and academic instutution. I have and will continue to work closely with teachers to understand the way professional development can be restructured to enhance field-specific content knowledge, translating into updated, relevant instruction for students. If a teacher knows their content well, they can teach it well; however, teachers traditionally do not take classes based on their content after exiting college, so their instruction becomes dated. Not only will field-specific professional developments help update instructional practices, it can lead teachers to improved feelings of being respected as a professional and increase job satisfaction.
