I am currently researching how the most massive galaxies (that are a > few 10s more massive than the Milky Way) in the universe evolve, starting from their formation, around 1 billion years after the big bang to the present day. I have tackled this research from two angles. The first is by attempting to remove as much complexity as possible. To this purposes, I have been developing a large semi-empirical model which combines empirical relations for key galaxy properties with the merging histories of galaxies, found using either dark matter simulation or analytically using excursion-set formalism. The second approach is to use tailored cosmological, hydrodynamical zoom simulations to understand, for example, the role the central supermassive black hole has on massive galaxy evolution.

Science 2 Data Science (S2DS) is an industry-sponsored programme that trains analytical PhDs and scientists in the commercial tools and techniques needed to be hired into data science roles. The aim of the workshop is to create a pipeline of high quality, commercial data science talent. Along with a lecture series, the program offers the opportunity to work closely with a partner company to gain industry experience. Specifically, I worked with three other S2DS fellows in a consultancy project for the health-care start-up Watch out Diabetes (WOD) who aim to create a digital health program to aim women diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Over the five weeks, our team focused on adding nutritional guidance to the digital health program which a key feature WOD requested. The main functionality we provided was a recipe generator which suggested meals to the user based on their nutritional requirements (cals, fats, sugars, etc). We extended this project to include a recommendation engine so the program can select recipes based on previous recipes the user "liked" rather than at random.

In this research, I studied the nearby high mass black hole binary, Cygnus X1. We combined two commonly used diagnostics for the X-ray behaviour, colour-colour and colour-intensity diagrams, to get a deeper understanding of the physics of the system. We later used clustering analysis techniques such as principle component analysis and diffusion mapping to see if we could different 'states' within this system.
