I am a fluid dynamics specialist with fifteen years' experience working within multidisciplinary teams of engineering consultants across diverse industries. I founded and ran a small engineering consultancy firm Paul Engineering, which specialised in solving problems for marine, renewable energy and the built environment. I also helped run a start-up business in the renewable energy sector before relocating to Gothenburg to take up a role at FS Dynamics, one of the fastest-growing and most exciting engineering consultancy firms in CAE.My MSc gave a deep understanding of fluid theory but it was through my employment, first at CD‑adapco and later at Lloyd's Register, that I honed my technical capabilities and developed skills in other areas crucial to engineering consultancy such as project management, client relations and marketing. As Deputy Manager of the Fluid Dynamics Group at Lloyd's Register, I managed and grew a highly successful team of fluid dynamics engineers and worked on Lloyd's Register's technology policy and strategy. These skills I later put to good use as I worked to grow and develop Zyba, a wave energy technology start-up, and Paul Engineering, an engineering consultancy, into successful businesses. In doing so, I learnt much about running a small business, including areas such as contract law, marketing, small business accounting, and tax relief schemes on investments. I am resourceful, committed and quick to transfer my experience and skills to new industries and opportunities.

Group ManagerFs Dynamics May 2023 - PresentGothenburg, Vastra Gotaland County, SwedenAs Group Manager for one of the CFD teams, my daily activities include personnel management, recruitment and sales, though also - as part of the leadership team at FS Dynamics - more strategic business planning and budgeting. I have a specific responsibility to ensure that the in-house part of our business continues to grow. Additionally, I am the group manager who most commonly liaises with the senior management and the IT department to ensure we have the computational resources we need to meet our ambitious plans for continued growth.Despite taking on a managerial role, I maintain a string technical focus, managing a large proportion of our in-house projects and often working on those projects myself when some extra experience and expertise is required. The day I become more adept at making spreadsheets in Excel rather than simulations in STAR-CCM+ is happily still some way off. -
Principal EngineerFs Dynamics Oct 2019 - Jun 2023Gothenburg, SwedenAs Principal Engineer in the CFD group, I had responsibility for coordinating in-house resources across the organisation as well as managing and working on CFD projects. I was also jointly responsible for recruitment and training of our team of nearly 50 CFD engineers and became part of the management group that develops business plans and budgets for the organisation. It was a volatile few years in this role. From experiencing exceptionally high demand for CFD services over the winter of 2019/20, we suffered a severe crash as Covid shut down many of our key clients. Rebuilding a strong flow of projects and a positive work environment was the main challenge as normality returned in the second half of 2021 but this was quickly followed by an unprecedented period of growth in demand combined with a very tight job market so recruitment became a major focus in 2022/3. Under the same period, we saw both our customer base and the technical requirements of our projects shift more and more towards the energy transition, electrification and digitialisation. This required all of us to be flexible and to learn new skills, be aware of new technologies and accustom ourselves to new industries. -
Senior EngineerFs Dynamics Mar 2017 - Oct 2019Gothenburg, SwedenAs well as learning how to work in a different country and in a new language, my work at FS Dynamics vastly broadened my experience of different industries, different software and different technical solutions. I led and worked on projects for the automotive, offshore, marine and packaging industries amongst many others. Projects included: * Hydraulic capacity of a water treatment device * CFD analysis of a mixing tank * Efficiency study of a novel wind propulsion system * Helideck analyses for an offshore vessel * Development of a fast model for a complex HVAC system * Motion of a check valve * Vehicle external water management * Cooling system analysis * Ship resistance calculation * Ship wake analysis * Ventilation of turret of an oil platform * Exhaust flow analysis * Gas turbine ventilation & thermal analysis * Root cause analysis of damage to a high-pressure pipeline * Flow within fish tanks * Design development of a large industrial burner * Cooling analysis for electronic systems on a gas turbine * Drilling well wash out prediction * Gas leakage analysis -
DirectorPaul Engineering Consultancy Services Feb 2015 - Feb 2017London, United KingdomI founded Paul to provide a wide range of fluid dynamics-based engineering services in the marine, renewable energy, and built environment sectors. Using a small team of highly-experienced experts with backgrounds in some of the largest firms in their industries we provided a knowledgeable, specialised and personalised service to our clients. A broad, cross-sector knowledge base enabled us to utilise experience and capabilities from one industry in all those that we operate in.In this role, I extended my skill set to cover fire and smoke modelling for the built environment sector using the CFD solver FDS and the model building software Pyrosim. I also learnt more about small business administration than I ever imagined would be necessary, -
DirectorZyba Ltd Mar 2015 - Feb 2016London, United KingdomDuring my time at Zyba, we were working to optimise and modularise an exciting but simple new renewable energy technology called CCell, which extracts energy from ocean waves, to further reduce costs of manufacture, deployment and operation. Partly funded by Innovate UK, we sought transform what had already been shown to be the most hydrodynamically efficient technology in the wave energy market into a saleable product. My role involved project planning, pitching to investors, managing resources, seeking deployment partners, marketing, and overseeing the hydrodynamics component of the project.www.ccell.co.uk -
Member Of Advisory BoardZyba Ltd Dec 2014 - Mar 2015London, United KingdomI provided advice and oversight of fluid dynamics-related research and development work for Zyba's CCell wave energy device. -
Deputy Manager Of Fluid Dynamics GroupLloyd'S Register Mar 2013 - Feb 2015London, United KingdomMy role involved assisting the Fluid Dynamics Manager with technical and administrative oversight of the Fluid Dynamics Group, which we grew from four to nine technical specialists in the time I was there. I operated as theme leader in Lloyd's Register Marine's Technology Governance Process developing technology policy and strategy for the Optimising Propulsion Performance theme. It was my responsibility to ensure that Lloyd's Register was technologically prepared for market changes in this area over the following five years. Additionally, I was responsible for advising and assisting Lloyd's Register IS with planning, purchasing and maintaining systems and services that our department relied upon, including our HPC cluster. -
Senior Cfd ConsultantLloyd'S Register Mar 2011 - Feb 2015London, United KingdomI performed and oversaw a wide variety of fluid dynamics-based consultancy work, along with occasional on-site measurements and observations. The majority of projects were for the marine industry, though I also worked on renewable energy projects from time to time. Major foci were design optimisation, cavitation and cavitation-erosion modelling, aerodynamic drag analysis, pollution and environmental analysis, and energy-saving devices and their scale effects. In addition, my role involved preparation of proposals, budgeting, project management and business promotion. -
Cfd SpecialistLloyd'S Register May 2007 - Mar 2011London, United KingdomMy position involved performing a wide variety of CFD consultancy work, along with occasional on-site measurements and observations. The majority of my work was for the marine industry, though I also worked on some renewable energy projects. During my time in this role I helped improve Lloyd's Register's CFD capabilities from simple single-phase ship wake prediction to complex multi-phase and multi-physics analyses. -
Cfd EngineerCd-Adapco Feb 2006 - May 2007London, United KingdomMy function was to use client's cases to test new features in CD‑adapco CFD software. My projects included investigation of turbomachinery, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and multi-phase flows. -
