Technical Advisor - Communication With CommunitiesInternews Network Jul 2014 - Sep 2014South SudanAs the Technical Advisor for “communications with communities” (CwC) I supported the CCCM (Camp Coordination & Camp Management Cluster leads /IOM and each partner NGO to assess the ongoing CwC strategies being deployed. I helped assessing specific needs and gaps in order to develop an overarching framework. I developed a practical self-assessment 5-level-tool for CCCM-partners to evaluate how they are doing with their CwC-interventions and how to take it to the next level. Based on this tool, a CwC-strategy was developed for all CCCM-partners to roll out in their respective duty stations.I conducted a separate CwC-trainings for Camp Managers, program staff and outreach workers. I also evaluated the Internews Humanitarian Information Services and drafted recommendations to improve its impact, and supported these recommendations with trainings for Internews-staff. -
Project DirectorInternews Network Nov 2013 - Apr 2014PhilippinesAfter Typhoon Yolanda/Haiyan hit the Philippines in November 2013, Internews responded by setting up a Humanitarian Information Service in Eastern Samar, where the typhoon had effectively destroyed all existing information channels. On Nov 26 Internews launched Radio Bakdaw (“Rise”) in Guiuan (92.9FM) broadcasting live and pre-recorded content 14 hours a day. Radio Bakdaw was run by local radio makers with a focus on ‘News-You- Can-Use’ for the people of Eastern Samar. The station broadcasted live interviews with government and aid officials, but also with local people who expressed their needs and shared their expertise on the recovery. It distributed messages and announcements from aid organisations, produced news packages and quality humanitarian content on shelter, health and livelihood. To nurture the relationship with its listeners, it played songs requests that came via SMS into the station.Equally important was the feedback Radyo Bakdaw received from the community, with over a 1000 texts a day at the height of the emergency, all of which was documented, processed and fed back into the humanitarian system to improve the quality of the service delivery. At the same time the radio station also functioned as an information center for the community, with people coming inside to ask the latest information about jobs, relief distribution or the weather.Internews also continuously conducted research in the region to measure impact and gauge the information needs among people in the region. -
