Graduation research: This study investigates the sexual problems of young people with a physical disability, and to what extent they get the kind of sex education and support they need. The results demonstrate that young people with a physical disability experience specific problems in the field of sexuality and relationships. Findings indicate differences between women and men, and also between young people with an acquired physical disability and young people with a congential physical disability. The results from this study also show a strong association between particular biological and psychological variables on the one hand, and the presence of sexual dysfunctions on the other. The majority of the youngsters received sex education and are ‘(very) satisfied’ about the information they received. However, this information is not specifically related to their physical disability, nor does it contain information about marriage, parenthood, birth control, sexually transmitted diseases and sexual abuse. Young people with a physical disability often get more sex education from people in their environment than from care workers. The results show that young people with a sexual dysfunction need professional aid, but only a small number of these youngsters make use of sexological health care.
