About Steven Moates
Steven Moates, SLP.D., CCC-SLP, CHSE, is an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist and Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE). Dr. Moates is a Clinical Associate Professor and the Clinical Program Director for the Online CSD Program at Baylor University in Waco, TX. Responsibilities include managing the clinical operations of the online CSD Program and teaching clinical and academic courses. Dr. Moates is also the Owner of the Smoky Mountain Communication Center and Executive Director of STUTTERFLY, Inc. Smoky Mountain Communication Center offers stuttering therapy services in the states of GA, NC, and MT. STUTTERFLY, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. The mission of STUTTERFLY, Inc. is to build community with people who stutter through fly fishing and the outdoors. Dr. Moates is the co-founder and co-facilitator of the STEAR Circle, an enrichment program for graduate students interested in exploring topics in stuttering. He is a facilitator at Camp ShoutOut, a camp for children who stutter. In 2023, Dr. Moates' research focused on the conflict management styles used by graduate students while engaged in off-campus clinical rotations. In 2017, his research measured the perceived effectiveness of supervisory behaviors and supervisory attitudes toward supervising SLPAs in schools. In 2023, he researched conflict management styles student clinicians used while engaged in off-campus placements. Dr. Moates has presented regionally and nationally on topics of stuttering, program development, clinical supervision, clinical education, and rural services. Dr. Moates also teaches graduate-level stuttering coursework at Baylor University and as an adjunct instructor for Minot University in Minot, North Dakota, and Columbia College in Columbia, South Carolina.
