Why did I become involved in convenience stores? Convenience stores have always fascinated me. I suppose I became fascinated with convenience stores in the 40s when I was 7-8 years old. A new convenience store opened up in our neighborhood, owned by the Southland Corporation and managed by a convenience store manager whose name was "Mr. Thompson." Mr. Thompson's convenience store was called Pak-A-Sak, and was only one of several convenience stores of the same name in our city. Our little convenience store measured less than 1,000 square feet, but it contained almost every little convenience item a person could want. That was decades before the first Wal-Mart came to our town. As I was growing up, in the mid-sixties I had the pleasure of calling on the regional convenience store manager of that company in an effort to sell him radio advertising for a local radio station. After making my sales pitch and securing an order, the regional manager began to tell me all about his convenience store operation and how he managed his convenience stores. One of the things that sticks in my mind still, is a statement he made I will never forget. He said, "If I could just get my cashiers to asked the question, 'Did you check to be sure you had enough (toothpaste, shaving cream, deodorant, bread, etc) when you left your house this morning?', and then follow up with, 'We have a sale on (insert product name), did you notice that while you were shopping?' He said, that if he could get his convenience store employees to do that, he could double the profits in all of his convenience stores.'Wow!' I remember thinking. 'If there is that much profit belong lost from the lack of doing one simple thing, how much unseen potential is there in the convenience store industry anyway?' There are so many convenience store retailers out there who need help getting started, growing, and serving their customers, I will never run out of things to do.
