About Christopher Echols
I'm a seasoned mechanical design engineer with extensive experience that spans modern telescopes, instrumentation for astronomy, and aerospace. Located in the Detroit metro area near Ann Arbor, I am currently seeking my next opportunity!Working collaboratively with teams of engineers to solve complex organizational problems is right in my wheelhouse. My background includes systems engineering, project management, mechanical design, structural and thermal analysis, drafting and GD&T, prototyping, fabrication, testing, and assembly.I have contributed to major design efforts on two of the three largest telescope facilities currently under development, the Giant Magellan Telescope and the Thirty Meter Telescope, both vying to be the largest telescopes ever built when completed.I have also designed part of the optical suspension mounts for the Laser Interferometer Gravity-wave Observatory, or LIGO, the facility that proved the existence of the gravity waves predicted by Einstein's theory of relativity (and earning the project founders the Nobel prize in physics in the process). Many moons ago, I worked on instruments for telescopes, spaceflight projects for JPL, robotics projects, and numerous laboratory projects.I began my career with formal training on Pro/Engineer (now Creo), providing a solid foundation on which to build my CAD skills. I now have over 20 years of experience using SolidWorks for mechanical design, including the simulation modules for structural and thermal analysis. I would consider myself and expert with this software at this point. Additional exposure to Siemens NX rounds out my CAD knowledge. I also have experience with ANSYS and Femap (Nastran) on the analysis side of things.Lastly, I bring to the table a highly collaborative spirit. I highly value relationships and working alongside others, something that I have found to be rare in the engineering discipline. Originally from Kansas City, I moved to Pasadena, California to attend Caltech, and after graduating with a BS in Engineering & Applied Sciences, began my career in Southern California, where I lived until about two years ago. I relocated to Michigan about two years ago to be close to family. In my spare time, I really enjoy music and bicycles!
Listed skills include Solidworks, Mechanical Engineering, Simulations, Engineering, and 8 others.
