As assistant director for undergraduate programming I am responsible for many of the on-boarding, engagement and transition programs for students within the CANR. I support the college colloquium (welcome events), Demmer Scholars Internship Program, Glassen Scholars Internship Program, American Semester Program, undergraduate research, academic orientation program, ANR Distinguished Scholars Scholarship and the ANR commencement ceremonies (Baccalaureate & Graduate). I will be working to continue to align each program with the college's and university's student success initiatives.

Neighborhood Student Success Collaborative

Review data related to existing student success programs and make recommendations for programmatic and policy changes. Consider programming and staffing alternatives that would enhance the delivery of needed services by identifying challenges and recommending solutions. Explore and recommend new programmatic initiatives that enhance advisors' ability to effectively support student success. Identify and report individual and trend student data to Neighborhood partners for consideration. Work with advising staff to i) develop systems that support effective student outreach, ii) conduct assessments of advising efforts in the Neighborhood, iii) administer administrative functions (e.g., reinstatements, SAP, EASE, readmission, reinstatements, grief absence).Maintain, update and create Neighborhood advising processes, forms, and resources (major changes, petition for reinstatement, emergency action plan, triage documents, online probation conference, advisor training manual)Use multiple student success systems to proactively identify and support at-risk students. Serve as the MSU Institution Diversity: Excellence in Action (IDEA) committee representative for the Neighborhoods; helping to inform and maintain focus on diversity and inclusion efforts. Serve on the Pre-Law Advising committee to identify and develop programming for law school process (freshman to senior).

Provide advisement on course options and other academic and student affairs related matters. I handle questions concerning college and university programs, requirements and explanations of the academic policies and procedures. I serve as a team member in college and university wide student support efforts through service projects, seminars, fairs, etc.

Worked to maximize operating performance of two apartment communities. Monitored financial and business dealings of the communities, routinely monitoring each community’s adherence to the budget. Track data pertaining to leasing status, leasing activity, financials, and maintenance. Reviewed, investigated, and resolved resident issuesRoutinely inspected community buildings, grounds and vacated apartments in order to maintain high quality appearance and product. Directed and coordinated activities of maintenance/grounds staff, housekeeping staff, and leasing staff.Reviewed and approved all prospective resident applications and credit reports, insuring equitable match to leasing credit criteria. Supervised 1 subordinate supervisor (leasing manager), 2 service technicians and 6 leasing agents. Developed and coordinated a motivated community staff team through effective personnel management; assigning and directing work; appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing issues and resolving problems, seeking as needed and required counsel and final approval from the Area Director.

Worked with the SUPER program as an advisor. S.U.P.E.R. - Summer University Program: Excellence RequiredSUPER was founded in 1988 by Dr. James B. Hamilton, former Assistant Provost of Undergraduate Education. The objective was to assist underrepresented, low-income, and first generation college students with the transition from high school to college. Under the direction of Betty J. Sanford, SUPER Coordinator, the program supported students during their entire first academic year. SUPER had two basic objectives. One was long-term; it strived to help its students build strong academic foundations for four or more years of university study. The other was short-term; it helped students adjust to the demands of their first year at MSU. Borrowing from emerging theoretical literature, the SUPER staff identified the key attributes that appeared to promote academic resiliency within historically “at-risk” freshman populations. Following the framework of Dr. Nan Henderson’s Resiliency Wheel, the SUPER staff developed a comprehensive yearlong program committed to reinforcing environmental characteristics and students’ individual values to achieve maximum resiliency in their freshman year. SUPER’s overarching goal was to build resiliency in students so they can compete and succeed at Michigan State University.
