They rarely play silent movies, but you must make a point of visiting when they do. From time to time they will play 3 or so movies as an all-day event--well worth the drive from Salt Lake. When the auditorium goes dark, little lights twinkle from the ceiling as stars. Golden colors shine off of the gilded sphinxes who guard the enormous drawcurtain screen. When it's an organ-accompanied silent film, a Mighty Wurlitzer Organ rises from the stage, complete with player--just as it would have in 1924 when the Peery Egyptian first opened. This theater is a time machine to the brief period in the 1920s when silent films were sometimes an event attended by high society. In this cinema, I can imagine dressing up to be entertained by the images of Douglas Fairbanks or Buster Keaton, accompanied by orchestras or skilled organists on the famous Wurlitzer pipe organ.I've only visited one other theater with a rising Wurlitzer like the Peery Egyptian--the Stanford Theater in Palo Alto. That repertory theater plays silent films every week (and has a daily schedule of Hollywood classics). The experience of Peery's Egyptian is ineffable--I feel that this place is a national landmark, but even Utahns barely know about it. I'm the first review, after all. According to their online calendar, they've played only one movie this month. Two weekends ago, the 1200-seat venue was used for a body building contest. It's a damn shame that it's underused"
