Responsible for five classes per day teaching one period of 12th grade Literature class and four periods of 9th grade Language Arts. 12th grade literature included reading several novels and having class discussions about the novels. Students were encouraged to speak every class period about the book they chose and to provide details about their interpretation of the book’s themes and plot. Planned and co-taught a 9th grade CT Language Arts class with a Special School District teacher. This involved differentiating instruction for multiple levels of students with IEPs in the classroom. The co-teacher and I worked on modifying lessons so every student had an equal opportunity of success. Collaborated with Professional Learning Communities to develop common goals, lesson plans, and assessments. Acted as a "Champion" or mentor for a struggling student. I met with the student 1-3 times per week to check in with him to make sure he was keeping up with class work and passing his classes. Participated in Professional Development each month. Workshops included information on socratic seminar practices, analyzing data to better understand student achievement, and book studies about standards based grading. Students earned high school credit for earning a passing grade in the course. Units included persuasive speaking, impromptu speaking, informative speaking, oral interpretation, and debate. Students were required to use research skills, oral presentation skills, and technology skills for the activities in the course. Developed new curriculum by unpacking standards and working with colleagues within the district's theater department. Unique lessons included a theater history lesson where students worked in groups researching time periods and performing theatrical pieces from the time periods, a monologue unit where students performed a lengthy speech to the class multiple times using multiple characterization techniques, and Public Speaking curriculum including research skills, impromptu speaking skills, informative speaking skills, and debate. Designed lessons to connect the theater curriculum with Character Education such as having students write, act, direct, and film anti-bullying videos and submitting the videos to national and statewide contests. Managed the budget, organization, and production of two after-school shows per year, plus a Talent Show and an end of the year banquet. Each year I managed one after school musical in the fall and an after school play in the spring.
