Optica is dedicated to providing its 21,000 members and the scientific community with educational resources that support technical and professional development. Optica publications, events and services advance the science of light by addressing the ongoing need for shared knowledge and innovation. Core responsibilities include:• forecasting/tracking 7-figure departmental budget• global distribution, composition and print processes (100+ print issues annually)• developing data sources for business intelligence visualizations and reporting (Tableau)• drafting proposal requests, negotiating vendor contracts• business continuity documentation (Confluence)• reprints/inventory• vendor oversight

Contract: Community Connections (ComCon). ComCon is the information center for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD's) Office of Community Planning and Development (CPD). As a member of the Publications team, my primary function was to coordinate the production of print and electronic media for CPD. This included:• drafting schedules and budgets• soliciting bids from small businesses (printers, graphic designers, translation firms)• monitoring progress to ensure that the project is completed on time and within budget• serving as the main point of contact for all parties associated with assigned projectsMany projects required that I provide graphic design or government printing office (GPO)editorial services. I was also responsible for writing articles on housing policy/notices for a weekly fax/e-mail broadcast that was sent to public interest groups.

As an independent consultant, I provided a wide range of services to academic publishers and societies including Cell Press, Novartis, American Lung Association, and The American Society for Clinical Investigation. eLance.com, a popular service marketplace, featured my business on their website and used it as a case study for developing client protocol. Responsibilities included providing:• design of web sites, magazines, advertisements, packaging, die cuts, posters, logos, brochures, and corporate identities• desktop publishing consultation to organizations developing in-house production departments (staffing, hardware, workflow).

Editorial Production Manager (NY)My initial task was to build a production department for five monthly magazines — Nature Genetics, Nature Medicine, Nature Biotechnology, Nature Structural Biology, and Nature Neuroscience — later assuming responsibility for one newsletter, supplemental issues, and all new launches.
