Prepared, characterized and tested ionic liquid coated heterogeneous catalysts (SCILL type) for application in the preferential oxidation of carbon monoxide. A wide variety of characterization / analytical techniques were used, including in situ FTIR, powder XRD, surface area analysis (BET), liquid NMR and mass spectrometry.Presented research findings in both oral and poster format to industrial sponsors at quarterly QUILL meetings. Additional duties included organising and performing tutorial sessions for undergraduate chemists in physical chemistry

Ph.D, "Effects of higher oxygenates on methanol synthesis"Industrially funded Ph.D was carried out under the supervision of Prof. David Jackson. Experimental testwork was carried out using a 500ml Berty reactor, operating under realistic industrial conditions (50-70bar, 250C). Process streams were analysed using on-line GC and mass spectrometry.Ex situ catalyst characterization was performed using a variety of techniques, ingluding thermogravimetric analysis (TGA-MS), surface area analysis (BET), powder XRD, and pulse chemisorption.Mechanistic insights into the behaviour of higher oxygenates on the surface of a working methanol catalyst were obtained by performing labelling studies, using both carbon and deuterium labelled species.Duties included:-Presentation of research findings to industrial sponsors at quarterly meetings-supervision of undergraduate laboratories-organisation and running of monthly internal group meetings
