About Stuart Coleman

I began my education at Alkrington Primary School and later attended Radcliffe Technical School at the age of 12. At 17, I embarked on an electrical apprenticeship with John Shaw and Sons Ltd., a company specializing in large hydraulic presses and injection molding machines. Despite the company's shift to oil hydraulic systems, my apprenticeship laid the foundation for a successful career in Western Australian Fluid Power Engineering.During my four years in the electrical department, I honed my skills in wiring and general press construction. As my competency grew, I tackled more complex tasks, collaborating with renowned hydraulic manufacturers like Towler, Rexroth, and Vickers. At 20, I transitioned to the Drawing Office, where I thrived as an Electrical Draughtsman and later Designer. At 25, seeking new challenges, I moved to Perth with my wife and joined Western Mining as an Electrical Draughtsman. The monotonous commute led me to pursue a Hydraulic Sales Engineer role with Malcolm Moore in Guildford, offering exciting projects with brands like Rexroth. In 1979, colleagues and I founded Pressure Dynamics, a fluid power engineering company. PDs flourished with notable projects, prompting expansions and acquisitions, including Gerrard Hydraulics and Smiths Industries (WA). Simultaneously, I played a key role in establishing the WA Fluid Power Society in 1983, later serving as its secretary for over 40 years.PDs ventured into the offshore oil and gas industry, leading to a successful joint venture with Dawson Offshore in 1986. Our project, the emergency shutdown system for Woodside Offshore Petroleum, showcased our technical prowess and project management skills. In 2001, Tyco International acquired PDs, and I continued as Engineering Manager for two years. Following a scandal, PDs returned to the market, and in 2006, I joined the board. The company thrived, necessitating a move to larger premises in 2008. After nine years, PDs was sold in 2013, and I transitioned to training development and fluid power consulting. My commitment to the fluid power industry extends to my long-standing role as Secretary-Treasurer of the WA Fluid Power Society. Since 1983, I have played a vital role in developing and promoting fluid power training, contributing significantly to the industry's growth. My fulfilling career has been marked by continuous learning and a passion for the journey.
