Vp Core ResearchFico 2007 - Feb 2011Bozeman, Montana, UsDuring this period I managed the Predictive Technology and Decision Technology groups, as well as a Software Prototyping Group. In addition to the usual management responsibilities, I was personally responsible for the development of new algorithms and applications that could transform a decision tree into a much more compact representation in such a way that all of the decision logic was preserved. On average, decision trees could be reduced in size by 25% but one remarkable application reduced a 30,000 node decision tree to a graph structure with only 480 nodes. I also developed mechanisms for logically comparing decision trees and assembling complex decision trees from independent “chunks” of decision logic. This work has involved the filing of four patents. During this period I also assembled a high performance software development team in Bangalore, recruiting and hiring from several of India’s IITs. This team was used to great advantage along with their US counterparts, achieving near 24 hour software development output. -

The team was inefficient to the degree that it was viewed by the executive staff as dysfunctional, some of whom argued to shut it down and outsource the development. I was able to diagnose the issues facing the team (they were using shrink-wrap software development methodologies for a web-based product), institute overhauls, carry out headcount reduction and replacement, and transform the team into one that was widely recognized as one of the most efficient and innovative in the company. -
Vp Product DevelopmentFico 2002 - 2004Bozeman, Montana, UsDuring this period I was significantly involved in the activities leading up to the eventual acquisition of HNC software. Once HNC was acquired I managed development teams from both legacy HNC and Fair Isaac. In total, the headcount here was close to 200. There was significant overlap, however, in the functions of the products offered by both companies. I was charged with developing a plan for merging the products in a way that the best of both could be kept and the overlap discarded. I was also asked to restructure the development teams so that they could work together on the unified products. -

This new technology enabled Fair Isaac to optimize the portfolios of financial institutions subject to constraints, transform the optimal solutions into interpretable decision trees, and deploy those trees into the enterprise. The initial Strategy Science offering was for Credit Card line optimization and it successfully increased profits anywhere from 5% to 35% depending on the aggressiveness of the strategy. -
