An engineer and scientist at heart, who is inspired by nature.My initial interests in image processing came from my love of cinema, colour and special effects. My work in attempting to understand and replicate one facet of human vision has led to knowledge regarding how different visual features give clues to different scene or object information. The vast majority of visual tasks, that we as engineers are trying to solve at present for machine vision systems, have already been solved to high levels by nature. Replicating these is not a trivial task, however it is an inspiring one for myself.Through my work I have long been driven by gaining knowledge from seemingly unconnected research areas and utilising it to aid developments in other areas. Whilst my Ph.D. was focused on human colour vision I have used it to aid investigations into non-destructive testing of materials, insect vision and within the food processing research field (Google Scholar page via Contact Info.). I am driven by interdisciplinary collaboration and working in teams that are such themselves. This mode of working also allows me to entertain my love of seeking out new knowledge in novel fields. To this end I have attended and presented at a number of international conferences(AIC (colour science), VSS (vision science), ASABE and CIGR (agriculture)).However I am also interested deeply in tackling pure machine vision challenges themselves. From my previous work I have also understood how knowledge of the human visual system and visual processing should not be used in attempts to only replicate it, but also understand what it cannot do and where it can fail. This latter knowledge is just as important in areas such as safety critical tasks. As such with my future work, I wish to make a mark.
