About Stuart Cunningham

Experienced Design Engineer based at a UK AGR Nuclear Power Station. Responsible for the execution of the Fleet Engineering standards and processes for safe and reliable operation of a nuclear power plant.I lead a team of 10 Engineers within the Design Engineering Department and manage resources to ensure full compliance with safety and environmental standards and expectations. My primary area of responsibility is to ensure that all plant modifications and commissioning are carried out with full regard to site licence requirements, statutory regulations, company and local directives, procedures and safety rules.I have worked on a variety of large electrical, mechanical and C&I projects, specialising recently in Reactor Safety and Shutdown Systems.Specific areas of responsibility include Maintaining Design Integrity of the power station and ongoing Configuration and Safety Case Management. This includes Authoring and Verifying Engineering Changes (modifications to both the Plant and the Safety Case) and performing the role of Responsible Engineer (RE). The RE project manages the modification from conception to completion and is responsible for delivering the project to the appropriate quality, within agreed costs and time constraints, including any implication with respect to the safety case.I have performed the role of Responsible Engineer for over 140 modifications to the station, successfully delivering a huge volume of both Plant and Safety Case modifications. These have ranged from large multi-year, multi-phase projects, to smaller modifications, which, although less complex, have delivered huge improvements to both Nuclear Safety and commercial performance. The modifications cover an array of varied station systems and engineering disciplines.I regularly volunteer at a variety of educational events. These have included:• High School Careers Fairs, promoting the uptake of STEM subjects and University courses• University Roadshows, promoting engineering careers in the Nuclear Industry• Edinburgh International Science Festival – I have volunteered for the last four years at the Career Hive – promoting STEM subjects to early years school children
