I joined Costain in January 1990 and until around 2004 I worked in a variety of roles such as Plant Operator, Front Line Supervisor, Engineers Assistant and Storeman.In 2004 I joined the Safety Health and Environmental (SHE) Department and have since worked on a wide variety of construction sites as SHE Advisor including water treatment works, highways projects, technology and structures. Since 2014 I have taken up the role of SHE Manager working on such diverse contracts as Belfast to Larne dualling, Hammersmith flyover strengthening and M1 junction 19 to 16 smart motorways.I have considerable experience in a variety of construction activities and plant machinery. Some key areas I have been involved with as a Health and Safety professional include: • Large scale concrete pours and structures such as the new build Bristol Water reservoir at Banwell.• Major earthworks and water protection such as 1 million meters3 cut and fill operations at Church Village Bypass.• Demolition of buildings and bridges such as the technology buildings and Rail Bridge at Port Talbot.• Complicated M & E works such as the installation of the Pasteurisation plant at Mogden STW (first of its kind in the UK).• Deep excavations and directional drilling such as Bristol Water pipeline installation under the river Frome – a directional drill length of 750m at a depth of 35m.• Pipe Jacking such as a twin 800mm installation under the river Coln as part of the Perryoaks relocation project.• Confined Space works which includes both clean and dirty water environments as well as works inside bridge decks on multiple sites.• Integration of new employees to Costain such as the development of the Oil Pipelines Agency TUPE staff.• Work in high speed road environments such as M1 junction 19 to 16 Smart motorways and All Wales technology framework.• Working in the Technology sector such as All Wales Technology Framework working with variable message signs and gantry signals.
