Throughout my career at Hymans I have always pushed myself. I started as the financial accountant and through hard work and determination I was promoted finance manager in June 2017. In my role I am responsible for short and long term planning for the team, peer review of management information, creation and review of monthly management accounts, monthly forecasting and budgeting, monthly MI and KPI reporting, VAT returns submission and overall responsibility of the annual statutory accounts. Working at Hymans has helped me to develop my already strong communication and social skills. I have to communicate with a variety of individuals within the firm from members of the LLP and senior management to presenting to the new graduates in their first week of their first professional job. The strong working relationships I have built have led to me being invited to take part in networking, client and charity events with other likeminded individuals at Hymans.

My role within Hymans Robertson is very diverse and interesting. On a day to day basis I help create management information such as monthly accounts and flash stats for the business. I am also finance business partner for number of different areas within Hymans not only helping them to create and manage their budget but also with any ad hoc information they require. As the financial accountant I take a senior role in the group audit ensuring that all audit files have been created and answering any questions which the auditors have. Recently I have also become business partner for a new part of our communications business which we have set up as a joint venture. Taking the company from manually processing to full integration with our financial systems has been a great learning experience. I have been heavily involved throughout the process and continue to be their main finance contact. I successfully managed the first statutory audit for this company and integrated it within our group accounts.Since I started within Hymans I have become a people manager for 3 trainee accountants. On a weekly basis I have to prioritise their workload ensuring that they get the correct experience for their development.

After graduating from the University of Glasgow I joined French Duncan on a 3 year ICAS training contract. While at the firm I have successfully passed all my CA exams and was admitted to ICAS membership on 31 August 2013 with the completion of the training contract. During my time with the firm I have dealt with a large variation of clients, spending my first year within the business services department where I created accounts for sole traders and small companies. This provided me with an in-depth experience of accounts preparation and effective communication skills. The following year I joined the audit department where I work currently. Within French Duncan we have a large array of audit clients which brings a lot of variation to the role. These clients range from Housing Associations or Charities to large listed companies.

I was named as the 'UK Accountancy Undergraduate of the Year' 2010 at the Target Jobs awards in London . The accountancy section was sponsored by KPMG and I was granted a six week internship with the firm. I initially spent two weeks in Glasgow working in both tax and audit, three weeks in London working within advisory for two weeks and then week spent following various senior partners. The final week of the placement was spent in Berlin where I helped prepare for the European partners meeting.
