From structure to tonality and language, working on bids is a great way to learn how to be an effective writer. I worked on bids in the UK and Europe during my time with PwC UK. I've worked on many more since as a freelancer, which has included being part of bid teams in places as far flung as South Africa and Japan. In addition to bringing an outside perspective to discussions about strategy and content and improving the quality of the document, using a professional writer gives the bid team more time to focus on building their relationship with the client — which is where the bid is usually won or lost. It turns out bid writing is good training for script writing in particular, since both demand clarity, economy and authenticity.
