Profile bio

About Stuart Dickens

I am a group leader and lecturer and the University of Bradford. I am a neuroscientist fascinated by the role of the extracellular matrix in development, ageing and disease. The extracellular matrix is the space between cells and plays an important role in setting the environmental tone of the brain. Specifically, I am fascinated by the perineuronal net, a specialised neuronal coating made of proteins and sugars. This complex structure forms a honeycomb lattice on some neurons, stabilizing synapses within its holes. It works to restrict aberrant plasticity and its appearance heralds the developmental change from a juvenile brain to a mature brain. Its dysregulation is associated with a myriad of disorders, including epilepsy and schizophrenia. Learning how we can modulate PNNs could help reactivate plasticity in the adult brain, helping recovery in spinal cord injury and dementia. As a researcher, I have expertise in long-term neuronal culture, microscopy, molecular biology and protein production.

Listed skills include Cell Culture, Molecular Biology, Molecular Cloning, Immunohistochemistry, and 12 others.

Bsc Neuroscience (Industry) Undergraduate

Leeds, United Kingdom

I've completed my undergraduate at the University of Leeds and obtained a first class degree with honours. Also in my final year I was awarded the Scientifica Prize which is awarded for to the student who obtained the highest mark in their degree program. As well as this I have been named on the Dean's List for the University's Faculty of Biological Sciences. My dissertation project was under the Supervision of Dr James Duce and completed a project on Alzheimer's Disease and Iron homoeostasis. For this I used mammalian cells, silencing, flow cytometry, surface biotinylation assays as well as western blotting. I have also completed In vivo module with the University.

Research Intern

Jacksonville, Florida Area

I worked at the Mayo clinic for a year in the area of molecular mechanisms of Parkinson's Disease- specifically the PINK1/Parkin mitophagy pathway. My specialties were Y2H and working with C.elegans as an experimental model. Other techniques included molecular cloning and sequencing, western blot and immunohistochemistry. I learnt a lot during the year and was constantly challenged. In particular my multi-tasking and planning skills grew immensely. Team work and communication was a big part of my every day work as part of general lab life but due to the great work culture at the Mayo Clinic there was a lot of inter-lab interactions and collaborations. At the end of the year I presented my work to the entire department of a hundred plus people.
