About Stuart Dunbar

A public engagement practitioner with extensive experience spanning public involvement, co-production, consultation, and communication mainly related to science, including health and social care. I have enhanced my capabilities through an original PhD research project focused on science engagement involving children and young people, which built on my earlier teaching background. I thrive in working with others from different backgrounds and enjoy the process of successfully bringing different perspectives and skills together to achieve positive outcomes for all involved. I am detail-oriented in my approach with accuracy and consistency paramount, yet also agile in adapting to unexpected challenges throughout the engagement process.

Through combining the fields of public engagement with science and childhood studies, I explored the perspectives of young people towards their science experiences through the Young SAGE project (http://ypagdunbar.wordpress.com), an intergenerational collaboration. My thesis focused on three main areas:a) the challenges for the adult researcher in approaching generational power dynamics;b) through a bespoke project, the development of project ownership within the project participants; andc) exploring participants' insights into public engagement with science involving young people. My thesis provides valuable insights into the potential barriers and affective dimensions that should be considered within science engagement projects involving young people, and also reveals how power dynamics within society marginalise the potential for young people's contributions to the practice of science. My thesis can be accessed through the Edinburgh Research Archive: https://era.ed.ac.uk/handle/1842/37278
