My professional areas of expertise are all related to general anesthesia, including basic research, education, and clinical care. My research focuses on the molecular interactions between general anesthetic drugs and their target molecules in the nervous system, particularly GABA-A receptors. This work has also led to collaborative efforts to develop new general anesthetic derivatives of etomidate. I teach medical students, pharmacology graduate students, and clinical anesthesia trainees about basic pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic principles, as well as the pharmacology of general anesthetics. I supervise students, technicians, and postdocs in basic research aimed at determining how and where general anesthetics like propofol, etomidate, alphaxalone, and barbiturates affect the activity of neuronal ion channels, including GABA-A receptors. We have also initiated new research using zebrafish larvae to screen drug libraries for new sedative-hypnotics and are developing transgenic zebrafish for mechanistic studies.
