About Stuart Forman
My professional areas of expertise are all related to general anesthesia, including basic research, education, and clinical care. My research focuses on the molecular interactions between general anesthetic drugs and their target molecules in the nervous system, particularly GABA-A receptors. This work has also led to collaborative efforts to develop new general anesthetic derivatives of etomidate. I teach medical students, pharmacology graduate students, and clinical anesthesia trainees about basic pharmacodynamic and pharmacokinetic principles, as well as the pharmacology of general anesthetics. Professor Of Anesthesia
I teach Harvard Medical School students both in classroom settings (HST150: Principles of Pharmacology) and in the MGH operating rooms. I also serve as a sub-committee chair for HST MD program admissions.
Anesthesia Research Fellowship Training Program Director
The Harvard Anesthesia Research T32 program has helped launch successful physician scientist careers since its establishment in 1978! Many of our graduates are now leaders in research and academic anesthesiology. As Director, I recruit mentors from Harvard-affiliated research institutions and eligible trainees (who will be junior faculty at Harvard-affiliated academic anesthesia departments), help potential trainees develop effective research and career development plans, and maintain program oversight to make sure trainees remain on track.Interested individuals are invited to contact me for details. Anesthestist
I supervise and teach clinical anesthesia trainees and certified registered nurse anesthetists. We provide perioperative care for patients in the MGH operating rooms, usually in both General Surgical Anesthesia and Vascular Anesthesia divisions.
Prinicipal Investigator, Molecular Pharmacology Of General Anesthetics
My research is supported by grants from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. I supervise students, technicians, and postdocs in basic research aimed at determining how and where general anesthetics like propofol, etomidate, alphaxalone, and barbiturates affect the activity of neuronal ion channels, including GABA-A receptors. We have also initiated new research using zebrafish larvae to screen drug libraries for new sedative-hypnotics and are developing transgenic zebrafish for mechanistic studies.
Platform For Or Teaching And Learning (Portal) Director
I am leading efforts to transform Clinical Anesthesia trainee education, based on principles of expert learning. Clinical faculty develop micro-courses in their areas of expertise, which are housed on a web platform. Trainees manage their educational experiences by selecting daily educational goals and providing feedback on the quality and quantity of educational interactions.
