I'm a Reader in Geochemistry within the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh. My early research primarily focused on determining how CO2 can be safely stored in the subsurface over significant timescales. This is the most critical issue confronting the acceptance of geological storage of man-made CO2 in the Earth's crust. I'm particularly interested in geochemically investigating how CO2 migrates in the crust, especially through faults and cap rocks and the residence time of CO2 in natural reservoirs. More recently I have been developing methods to trace CO2 migration and applying this knowledge to the tracing of methane for the environmental monitoring of unconventional gas exploration and extraction.Specialties: Noble gas and carbon isotope geochemistry, carbon capture and storage (CCS), unconventional gas, shale gas, coal bed methane, gas migration, geothermal energy
