Utilizing 40+ years as a photographer and printer, I specialize in the great American tradition of landscape photography, drawing on my deep study of the history of Photography. I also enjoy portraiture. and, having spent some time on stage, also specialize in live theater photography. Making digital copies of fine art for all media artists is challenging and enjoyable experience. I offer fine giclee custom printing gleaned from years of traditional photographic printing. yielding results that can only come from true experience.

Besa – Muslims Who Saved Jews In World War IIIn 2002, I joined my friend Norman Gershman to create this project. We made seven trips to Albania to document Albanians who rescued Jews during World War II. Albania, a small, predominantly Muslim country, gave up no Jews to the holocaust though occupied by Nazi Germany. Some 2000 lives were saved under the Albanian tradition of Besa which demands that a guest in one’s home be protected at all costs. The photographs we made in Albania, along with the stories we recorded from the rescuers have been exhibited in over 150 venues worldwide, including the U.N. in New York, The European Commission in Strasbourg, the British House of Commons, Yad Vashem, The Israeli Knesset, and The Museum of Tolerence. The book, Besa – Muslims Who Saved Jews In World War II was published by Syracuse University Press in 2008. This project has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning and NPR’s Weekend Edition. The movie, Besa – The Promise was recently completed by JWM Productions and will debut at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival this July. A curriculum and PowerPoint presentation are available to teachers on the web site. And I am available as a speaker to tell this amazing story and show the photographs we made. My responsibilities on this project have included Technical Photography Director, Book Designer, Writer, Speaker, Video, Audio and PowerPoint Production, Fund Raising, Website Design, Foundation Director and Movie Star.

Primarily using InDesign, I prepare all art files for press and make digital plates for the traditional presses, or output to the digital press (Xerox Docucolor 260). Graphic design work is also necessary, for which I use InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop. I am also called on to work with files created in Microsoft Publisher, Microsoft Office and Open Office.

I produce radio ads for Glenwood Springs Ford and Glenwood Springs Subaru. Utilizing Adobe Audition, I create music beds and produce the ads. I am also responsible for hiring and directing voice talent, recording, editing and production.

For over 20 years I have hosted Jazz On A Thursday Night, a 3 hour program (8-11 Mountain Time) celebrating America’s greatest musical art form – Jazz. Check it out at aspenpublicradio.org. I also served on the board of directors of this organization for 5 years.

I consider teaching to be an integral part of the creative process. I currently teach Digital Photography concentrating on the use of Digital Cameras and using Photoshop to edit and print photographs. In 2001 and 2002 I taught History of Photography and Perception at the Spring Valley campus Professional Photography program.

Commercial Photography and Custom Photo LabPhoto One was the best and largest custom lab in the Roaring Fork Valley. Catering to the professional and advanced amateur (who are abundant in this area), creating fine art color and black & white prints for artists, collectors and galleries kept me learning, innovating and excelling at traditional and alternative photographic printing processes. From making 8' X 10' color murals to exquisite 4" X 5" platinum contact prints, I created a haven for serious photographers to exercise their imaginations and let their creative juices flow.

Through the ‘80s and ‘90s, The Hill Gallery was a main-stay of the Aspen art scene. It featured mural size photographs of the Aspen area by John & Judy Hill, and Stuart Huck. The business was comprised of a downtown gallery and a lab and frame shop in the ABC. As manager my primary responsibility was training employees for excellence. Training to a good printer to be a fine art printer was a challenge. I found that instead of setting a standard, I could inspire an ideal that allowed employees to set their own high standards. That has become my management style.
