After gaining experience as a life, illness and disability underwriter, I moved into philosophy and underwriting and claims automated rules engine development.Developing and project managing the iptiQ underwriting and claims automation team gives me the opportunity to closely collaborate with internal and external stakeholders at all levels to achieve sustainable automation outcomes across EMEA and push our boundaries. Growing the talent in the underwriting team is also something that I'm passionate about. Day-to-day, my role is all-encompassing, ranging from training, presenting and account management to product and proposition development, underwriting cases and defining automation rules and philosophy.Having worked in both sales and underwriting, I can appreciate and empathise with the obstacles faced by both areas, which aids negotiation between risk management and driving business volume. I strongly believe that underwriting should help enhance sales and improve customer experience, and therefore that is at the core of my daily work.

End-to-end underwriting rules development with new ideas generated through analysis of MI and operational UW work. This entails design, sign-off, implementation and testing of new rules to manage risk, improve straight-through processing rates and the customer journey:- Automated UW development: Including lead developer responsibilities on some releases. This involved managing our team and timeline of work to deliver, with all interested parties kept informed and happy with our progress. Release content included philosophy changes design, build and testing of complex rule-sets such as mental health and neurological risk factor rules in a time-sensitive environment.- Literature and presentations: Responsibility for producing and explaining UW rules changes in the form of tailored presentations, calls and documents to ops, sales and key strategic partners. This included responding to feedback in an articulate manner using analysis of evidence and MI.- Internal UW website: Personal development and maintenance of the internal UW website so that ops have all the latest rule changes available online with sufficient rationale to justify philosophy decisions.- Prioritising deliverables: Shifting quickly depending on claims analysis, reinsurance changes and the need for defect resolutions, so the need for strong time management and adaptability in this role was paramount.- PMI development: Responsibility oordinating and rationalising changes to the PMI UW philosophy in order to make UW more competitive within the market and improve risk management.- UW forum: Pro-active involvement in an "transformation group" to ensure our UW was progressive in the market.
