The Corella and Bertram F. Bonner Foundation supports anti-poverty programs in the area of education and hunger. Engaged in work that advanced the Bonner Foundation’s mission through research and writingon higher education, strategic planning, community service, engagement, curriculum design,accreditation, and standards-based assessments. Functioned as an ambassador for theFoundation, which included dialoguing with other college/university presidents about the valueand benefits of being a Bonner partner. Served as consultant to the Foundation, assisting withissues pertaining to strategic planning, program design and assessment, resources developmentand allocation, among others based on the Foundation’s needs. Particular emphasis was placedon Bonner’s High-Impact Initiative. Continued work a book project based on nourishing thecourage to truly lead in higher education.

Worked collaboratively with the Board of Trustees and university executives to advance theUniversity’s mission, improve its finances, and enhance its status and standing as an institutionof higher education. Provided exceptional fiscal, strategic and operational leadership for NaropaUniversity to deliver excellence with distinction. Thoughtfully and creatively stewardedNaropa’s financial, physical and human resources in a manner characterized by efficiency,accountability, quality and diversity. Guided the University through the financial turmoil of2009-2010. Oversaw the reorganization of the University’s executive leadership team, thestructure of the faculty and academic programs and reorganized the enrollment managementstrategy and operations. Successfully gained reaccreditation by the Higher Learning Commissionand continued the implementation of Naropa’s Strategic Plan as outlined by the Board ofTrustees. Affirmed both the idea and ideals of contemplative education thereby allowing theinstitution’s goals of transformative, experience-based learning, community service, personaldiscovery and action-oriented research to flourish.• Worked with Naropa senior vice presidents and deans to balance revenues and expenseswhile maintaining excellence and coordination in all areas;• Consolidated all of the Naropa University’s functions, and 10 separate universityadministrators, into four new divisions;• Consolidated 18 academic departments into five schools;Enacted array of budgetary, policy and managerial reforms to ensure NaropaUniversity’s financial sustainability and longevity.• Reduced University expenses by $2.5 million dollars;• By the end of the 2010–2011 academic year, the University had its first balanced budgetin a decade and a surplus of $1.5 million;• Worked closely with the enrollment management team to increase graduate enrollmentby 4 percent, which exceeded graduate enrollment goals;• Undergraduate enrollment increased by 10 percent

In 2000, Lord transitioned from his positions of Assistant Professor of University Studies, Director of the Bonner Scholars Program, Executive Director of the Grover L. Hartman Center and associate Dean of DePauw University and took the position of Dean of the Tucker Foundation and Associate Provost at Dartmouth College.Lord’s work on co-development of Summer Enrichment at Dartmouth Program (SEAD) with the chair of Dartmouth’s Department of Education resulted in a program that brings students from under-resourced high schools in California, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania and South Carolina to Dartmouth for intensive academics, service learning and college preparation over a period of two to three weeks in each of three consecutive summers. More than 80 percent of SEAD graduates are now attending college. During his tenure at Dartmouth, Lord also initiated the Civic Internship Program, which provides students with a firsthand knowledge of the not-for-profit and philanthropy sectors of higher education.During his later years at Dartmouth, Lord was appointed as Dartmouth’s vice president for institutional diversity and equity on an interim basis for the 2007–08 academic year. While in this position Lord provided campus leadership on issues of equity, diversity and equality and in conjunction with school deans and department heads, Lord worked to establish diversity plans for each graduate school and department and for the provost’s division while advising the College’s president and Human Resources on diversity-related campus and personnel issues.

In 1987 Lord became the Assistant University Chaplain at DePauw University. During his term Lord received the ‘Honorary DePauw Tiger Award’ and became the Director of Community Service Program of DePauw University in 1987. In 1988 Lord was appointed as the University Chaplain and in 1989 received the ‘Outstanding Young Men of America’ award. From 1993 to 2000, assumed, in addition to his primary duties, the responsibilities of Assistant Professor of University Studies and Director of the Bonner Scholars Program. Lord served as the University Chaplain until 1994 when he was appointed as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Director of Leadership Development and Service and Director of Volunteer Programs at DePauw University, these postings lasted until 1996. In 1996, the Points of Light Foundation and the Corporation for National Service appointed Lord to serve as a one year term as executive director of the President’s Summit for America’s Future. The President’s Summit was a national volunteer initiative targeted at improving the quality of life of America’s youth. In 1997 Lord was appointed from Associate Dean of Academic Affairs to Associate Dean of DePauw University, in addition to Executive Director of the Grover L. Hartman Center at DePauw University. This posting lasted until 2000. Through Lord’s building of student service programs and the Hartman Center, annual student body participation in community service increased from 25 percent to more than 93 percent, a total increase of 1,900 students. Lord also created the Hartman Institute to promote dialogue on social justice issues and the Leadership Academy, a four-year comprehensive leadership development program. During his time at DePauw, Lord also served as the president and the vice president of the National Association for University College Chaplains.
