I have always been interested in roads less travelled, as well as writing, exploring, creativity, sport and the world. After completing a BA (Hons) in Commerce in Scotland, I travelled around the world for two years. That trip inspired a passion for International Relations (IR), which I have studied and worked in ever since. I first fell in love with IR theory and Diplomatic Studies, creating the Innovative, Nascent and Traditional Schools of Diplomatic Thought. No one had really done Diplomatic Theory before.Whether working, landscaping, or studying at university, I have always had clear, confident and compassionate mentors, colleagues and teachers. Halfway through a post-doc at The ANU, I was fortunate to land a job teaching International Relations, Diplomacy, Security and Terrorism at Bond University, on the Gold Coast. I love teaching, giving back to my students, and am proud to say I am rated in the top 5% of teachers at Bond University.In 2015, I was publishing on three innovative areas of diplomatic scholarship - Digital Diplomacy, Secret Diplomacy and Sports Diplomacy. Considering my passion for playing and watching sport (go Motherwell F.C.!), Routledge published Sports Diplomacy: Theory, Practice and Origins in 2018. This book explores the relationship between sport and diplomacy across the ages, and introduces four original Schools of Thought.The past few years been spent creating, researching, publishing, and working with diplomats, sportspeople and many others that believe in the power of sport to change the world (or some of it). In the space of ten years, we've built a field of studies, and translated our research into dozens of government reports, events and strategies. Now, I get to play for several teams: Bond University, the University of Edinburgh (Fellow at the Academy of Sport) and Griffith University (Adjunct Research Fellow). Most of the Consulting I now do through Sports Diplomacy Alliance, an advisory and accreditation business I co-founded.Where to from here? I'm only just getting started! As one of my favourite theorists - Sir Karl Popper - notes: "the more he more we learn about the world... the more conscious, specific, and articulate will be our knowledge of what we do not know; our knowledge of our ignorance." There is so much I have learned, and so much still to learn. I am interested in working with, and for, progressive people, institutions, governments and non-state actors. I firmly believe that if you want to change the world, look no further than your own heart, soul and reflection.
