The Smith Vicars Family Foundation (FKA Hunter Smith Family Foundation), a Virginia based private foundation, was founded in 2007 to lead the philanthropic goals of the family. The Foundation’s primary purpose is to provide grants to a variety of charitable organizations chosen by the Foundation's Board of Directors. Through these gifts, the Foundation seeks to improve the quality of life for present and future generations.The Foundation and the Smith Family have a history of funding the arts, theater and history through gifts to organizations like Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, The Paramount Theater, The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and The Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra. The Foundation has also supported local health and social service organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, The Boys and Girls Club, Hospice of the Piedmont and The Shelter for Help in Emergency.The Foundation and the Smith Family have also been faithful supporters of the University of Virginia in both Charlottesville and Wise, the home of family patriarch Carl W. Smith. The family provided funding for the expansion of football stadiums and marching band programs at both schools as well as renovations to the Chancellor’s residence at UVa Wise. The Foundation has provided support for capital campaigns or bricks and mortar projects in the Central Virginia area. These gifts are often made in the form a matching grants thus encouraging further support from the wider community. Proposals to the Foundation are by invitation only; unsolicited requests are discouraged.
