Dr Stuart Ernest Smith:Head of Training at CATS Aviation Training School, Bedfordshire, was born in 1967. He was educated at Ilford County High Grammar School, Sunderland Polytechnic and the University of London.After completing his PhD in Neuropharmacology, he trained as a Commercial Pilot in London and Oxford. He then became a Flight Instructor and taught trainee Commercial Pilots as an Aviation Theory Instructor at Heathrow before becoming licensed to fly the Boeing 737 aircraft with Astraeus at Gatwick. He founded CATS in 2002, a company that he built up eventually offering his unique online pilot training worldwide. In 2007 this led to the online pilot training system being launched.CATS offers some of the finest pilot training materials in the world. CATS has multiple satellite schools and partner training schools worldwide from Australia to the USA using co-branded CATS materials.Stuart's responsibility for this extensive worldwide training initiative has given him a comprehensive knowledge of aviation training, its successes and its difficulties. Stuart holds several other appointments including: Flight examiner (from 2006), Ground theory examiner (from 2005), Commercial Pilot instructor (from 2004), and Flight Instructor Course instructor (2008).Stuart has inspired many students both in his former career as a Neuroscientist and now in pilot training. Insights gained from these educational experiences have resulted in the production of his remarkable training media and modern approach to training. The study guide series for Airline Pilots was released in book format in 2009. More recently he has created CATS TV, an internet streaming aviation training channel. He is currently completing the creation of a ground-breaking BSc degree program in Piloting and Aeronautical studies and still may be found lecturing or flying at CATS satellite schools.
