For the last 18 years I have taught beginning Scots Gaelic study groups for the American Gaelic Society. I originally studied Scots Gaelic with local instructors and also spent one intensive course at the University of the Highlands and Islands on the Isle of Skye. For my last 10 years at the Library of Congress I was the Gaelic Recommending Officer for the Library of Congress, recommending and selecting books in Gaelic and about the Gaelic-speaking culture of Scotland and Ireland.

Beginning in December of 1986, I was a Descriptive Cataloger (Romance Languages) and later a Subject Cataloger (History and Social Sciences, primarily in French and Portuguese). In 2000, I transferred to Acquisitions and became a Senior Acquisitions Specialist for Portugal, Colombia, Ecuador, and Bolivia (including assisting with the Portuguese language receipts from Brazil). As the Gaelic Recommending Officer (2001-2011), I also taught Scots Gaelic to library employees who joined the Gaelic Language Table. The Table also sponsored concerts by visiting Scots Gaelic Mòd champions, the visiting female and male champions from the annual Scottish competition.
