About Stuart Tom,P.E.,Cbo

Stuart Tom is the Fire Marshal for the City of Glendale, California. Prior to this appointment, he served as Building Official for sixteen years, wherein he managed plan check/engineering, field inspections, and administration of the city’s Building & Safety Division. He has been a registered engineer in the states of Washington and California for over 25-years, and is very active in code-development of Fire- and Life-Safety Standards at both the national and state levels.At the local level, Stuart previously served two years as the Co-Chair of the So-Cal Fire Prevention Officer’s Fire Code Committee; he is a Past-President of the Los Angeles Basin Chapter of ICC ; prior to the state-wide transition to the International Building Code, Stuart was appointed to the Los Angeles Uniform Code Program Steering Committee, for which he shared the prestigious Los Angeles County Productivity Award from Supervisors Don Kanabe and Michael Antonovich; as Co-Chair of the State Fire Marshal’s Wildfire Ignition ad-hoc committee, he provided assistance in a thorough revision of California’s wildland urban-interface construction standards which currently comprise Chapter 7A of the State Building Code..Due to his commitment to safety, he was selected as the state’s Building Official of the Year by the California Building Officials Association in 2006, and was again selected as Building Official of the Year in 2009 by the California Fire Chiefs Association/Fire Prevention Officers. He is the only person to have received such award by both organizations. As a recognized expert in various fields of structural design and life-safety systems, he is the recipient of several other awards, including the CALBO President’s Award in 2010,Stuart is an advocate for fiscal responsibility, and public service. He believes that knowledge and education are vital tools that enable staff to protect the community in a cost-effective manner, even when faced with budgetary challenges.
