The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD or District) is a regional governmental agency, and political sub-division of the State of Florida, that oversees the water resources in the southern half of the state, covering 16 counties from Orlando to the Florida Keys and serving a population of over 8 million residents. It is the oldest and largest of the state’s five water management districts. Created in 1949, the agency is responsible for managing and protecting water resources of South Florida by balancing and improving flood control, water supply, water quality and natural systems. The agency is overseen by a nine member Governing Board whose members are appointed by the Governor of FloridaThe mission of the Water Quality Bureau (WQB) is to facilitate and support the restoration of the Greater Everglades ecosystems by providing high quality integrated scientific monitoring and assessment services that guide sound environmental resource decisions. WQB provides comprehensive long-term water quality monitoring and assessment services to address legally mandated requirements. These services also assess the status and trends of water quality throughout South Florida in support of multiple District programs and provide scientific data for recommendations regarding the management and restoration of the natural system.
