I started my career as a mathematics teacher in a school in one of the most disadvantaged areas of Scotland. I immediately saw the transformational power of education and the remarkable potential that rests within us all. Anyone who desires to learn should be able to access the very best teaching regardless of background or resource and I made it my mission to do all I could to support students (and later) teachers as they strive for excellence.Throughout my career, I have worked in various schools in the UK and internationally. I have led successful teams, served as Head of Department and Research Lead, and overseen whole-school teaching and learning. I am keenly interested in research-based pedagogy, cognitive science, effective instructional techniques, and curriculum design.A decade ago, I developed a website that is used to this day by tens of thousands of students every year. I have also authored a series of popular mathematics textbooks and am a regular presenter and keynote speaker at conferences in the UK and beyond. Most recently, I have been delivering professional learning to schools and groups of schools globally. I have a proven track record of success and I'm driven by working collaboratively, sharing what I've learned and making a positive impact in the world of education.ALTA Education is part of my contribution to the wider conversation about mathematics, teaching, learning and pedagogy.
