As an entrepreneur, working for a Corporate can be claustrophobic. I started Quantum because after more than 35 years in the Security Industry, I felt that I could create something different. I wanted to create a sustainable company that could break away from being the stereotypical guarding company. I wanted an environment where I could be as radical as I wanted to be, as long as what I did, worked and I wanted to attract partners who felt the same. But most of all, I started Quantum because I had a strong desire to "pay it forward". In other words, to create a company that could give those rare few people who do things differently and think differently, an opportunity to join a brand that allows them to succeed instead of cramping their style. To offer an opportunity for young people to draw on my experience and wisdom which is a direct result of failures and successes, so that one day, they too can pay it forward. We are all born to thrive but few have the courage to do so and instead choose to play it safe by "fitting in" and hoping for the best. At Quantum we want all our employees to thrive and work toward creating opportunities for them to do so. Our business is not for the faint hearted but instead, for those who dream of achieving success in life which goes beyond the desire to be financially independent. Quantum is for those who want to one day, tell stories that children want to listen to and that inspire young people to thrive because of those stories.

A long overdue and well-deserved holiday during which the Quantum dream was formulated.

My role was simply "Management and accountability for the business in the Western and Eastern Cape". I had the opportunity to be creative and to use all lessons learnt in my career into restructuring and growing the business. Having put a team together who were all passionate, experts in their fields and who were not afraid to question and challenge, we jointly achieved success in creating a fantastic work environment while exceeding budget expectations at the same time. People before profit was the mantra and it worked.

Orbis was successful in 6 years. Each partner was an expert within their own right and being the youngest, I learnt invaluable lessons, particularly from a financial management point of view. Accepting an offer from a global company at the time, was a good business decision. As a shareholder, I agreed to sell our equity to Securitas SA and as such, joined a global company known to be the best in the world in Security Services.

Company bought by Securicor then merged with G4 Falck. Left with partners to start Orbis Security Services. It was a case of "if you cannot find an environment that suits your values, create your own environment". And we did.
