I write about digital influence operations, online extremism and artificial intelligence. I try to use all the tools in my toolbox, including data analysis, visualization, programming and more. In 2022, I appeared on Anderson Cooper 360 and Politics Nation with Al Sharpton to discuss stories about Russian propaganda and America's far-right, including a story where we monitored Russian television coverage and compared it with official accounts. In late 2022, I reported on Elon Musk and Twitter, using data to examine bot activity and unsuspended accounts. In 2023, I covered the A.I. boom, particularly how it supercharges deceptive content.This year, I'm covering disinformation and A.I. in the 2024 presidential election.

I founded and ran the visual journalism wing of the Opinion section. I was hired in 2017 to build the department from the ground-up. In our first year, we won the Gold Medal at the Society for News Design for "Trump's Lies," a project I made with David Leonhardt. In 2018, I wrote, designed and analyzed data for a story in "The Homefront," an editorial board series that became a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. In 2019, I played a major role in editing and guiding the Privacy Project, a yearlong investigation in digital privacy, which won the Online Journalism Award for Online Commentary.In late 2019, I published a months-long investigation into the smartphone tracking industry, called "One Nation, Tracked." I built tools to analyze reams of location data, used Node to code a visualization method for large location data using animation, and was the lead writer on multiple stories. For that work, I was a finalist for the 2020 Livingston Awards.In 2020, I wrote the most-read Opinion piece of the year, "Find Your Place in the Vaccine Line." I also wrote a number of pieces about Facebook and the election. In 2021, I spent three weeks inside a QAnon chat room and wrote a viral audio/text piece about my experience.I've also appeared on TV and radio, including appearances on CNN's "Cuomo Prime Time" and MSNBC's "The Last Word."

Ran a team of 30+ graphics editors, journalists and developers. After assuming an interim digital graphics director role in 2015, I took control of both print and digital operations under a new title of Graphics Director. I also played a small role on a large team that won the Pulitzer Prize for the investigative series "Medicare Unmasked."
