I’m a creative producer, process facilitator, artist, and educator. I’ve been involved in the futures field for my whole adult life.Telling future(s) stories is not just an individual skill set, but a collective cultural capacity, crucial to realising any kind of just, sustainable, or ethical society. For almost two decades, I’ve worked to develop the capacity of social foresight by instigating new connections between futures, media/design/art, and public culture. The results have appeared in festivals, trade shows, museums, classrooms, strategy retreats, and city streets; on the Discovery Channel; in formal deliberative processes and high-level convenings; and in popular and scholarly outlets. As a sought after advisor, speaker, facilitator, and coach, I’ve worked with folks ranging from grassroots activists to billionaire philanthropists, UN diplomats to Fortune 500 executives, Oxford dons to indigenous elders, rocket scientists and high schoolers. I’ve also had the good fortune to introduce and develop foresight and experiential futures practices at some of the world’s leading universities, art schools, and cultural organisations.Experienced with shaping futures in many different modes, I completed the first PhD dissertation on the intersections of the design and foresight fields, THE FUTURES OF EVERYDAY LIFE, and co-created the widely used card game THE THING FROM THE FUTURE, the edited collection DESIGN AND FUTURES, and public imagination toolkit THE FUTURES BAZAAR.Originally from Australia, I hold degrees in arts and law from the University of Melbourne, and earned an MA and PhD in politics/futures with Jim Dator at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I devote a lot of energy to learning and growing relationships across disciplines and geographies. I’ve been a Fellow of the East-West Center (Hawaii), INK (India), World Futures Studies Federation, World Economic Forum, Berggruen Institute, and The Long Now Foundation. I served as a founding advisor and contributor to the initiative, which continues today, to embed foresight throughout the International Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC). In addition, I’ve been an Artist in Residence or Visiting Artist at Rio de Janeiro’s Museum of Tomorrow, Gray Area in San Francisco, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Immersive Denver in Colorado.Currently I chair the Board of Directors at the Center for PostNatural History, and am working to amplify social foresight as director of Situation Lab, professor at Tec de Monterrey, and a partner in various creative and research ventures.
