I am a Chicago lawyer who, after 35 years of practice, have opened my own firm, Chanen & Olstein, with my partner Ariel Olstein. Chanen & Olstein will continue to represent both plaintiffs and defendants, in trial and appellate work, in business litigation, and also criminal, exoneration, and civil rights litigation. I am so grateful to Pat Lamb and Nicole Auerbach for their friendship, leadership, and vision, and for helping to make the past ten years at Valorem Law Group the very best of my professional life. Nicole and I will continue to work on exoneration and civil rights cases together. I am fortunate to have been trained as a lawyer in the Chicago legal community, first at Northwestern Law School, and then at Sachnoff & Weaver, Katten Muchin, the United States Attorney Office, and Valorem. Other experiences, such as teaching at several area law schools, being appointed by the Illinois Supreme Court to serve as an ARDC Hearing Officer, and being appointed by the Illinois Attorney General to serve as a Trustee to a charitable foundation, have also fueled my constant learning as a lawyer. Chanen & Olstein represents individuals, families, businesses, public & private companies, whistleblowers, companies falsely accused by whistleblowers, white collar defendants, and witnesses. Our practice is in both state & federal courts and is national in scope. I have also represented numerous lawyers before the ARDC. Ariel and I have also been fortunate to be deeply involved with Northwestern's Center on Wrongful Convictions ("CWC") and pleased to have played a part in the exoneration of 14 individuals who were wrongfully convicted and who have collectively spent more than 235 years in prison for crimes they did not commit and are now all free men. We have also had success representing four of these clients in civil rights litigation, with jury verdicts of $25M and $13.4M, and pretrial settlements of $16M and 10M.
