The lab acts as a conduit taking the knowledge / talent within the University into the business world. We support both commercial and academic projects with services such as design research, interaction design, service design, information architecture and usability evaluation. Our aim is to become synonymous with human centred design and innovation. When people want to explore the future of HCI I want them to think of the Interaction Lab. As the Interaction Lab manager I hope to continue providing quality usability testing to our existing clients as well as looking into other areas where the Interaction Lab can support their businesses. With the Interaction Lab being located close to London’s bustling start-up community I am keen to identify ways to ensure that any digital products being developed there keep users at the centre of their process. I worked with 4 artists to create a space themed comic book anthology entitled 'Impossible Tales' as a way to show off my comic book writing. This I self published, stocked in small comic book stores and had reviewed positively in Comics Heroes magazine.

Since graduating from UEL I have continued to support the faculty as they make their courses more relevant to industry. This support has included informing a green paper that outlines the future of the university, speaking to current students at events and informing course tutors regarding new books / talks / software.I have also been heavily involved in lobbying for UELs EmotionUXD lab. Since joining System Concepts, Stuart has conducted user experience and accessibility research across multiple platforms (App, Tablet, Smart TV, Browser). Alongside client work Stuart is proactively involved in promoting System Concepts within the UX community. This has included speaking at the UKUPA World Usability Day event in 2011 about the importance of conducting accessible user research with SEN children. Stuart has also been involved in improving System Concepts client experience by supervising the modernisation of office spaces and informing the direction of the brand. My summer placement has seen me take a leading role in the creation of Newham Council’s new staff intranet (8000+ users). Whilst originally being hired as a copy assistant to migrate content from the old intranet to the new one I quickly took on more responsibility. I also liaise with the providers of the councils off the shelf intranet solution as well as the council’s in-house development team and an external web designer regarding the incorporation of usability features to current design. I have attended the council’s training on conducting successful focus groups and .NET developer training delivered by our intranet provider. My role has also involves training designated staff members in how to upload content to the intranet, paying strict attention to the councils style guides. Show less

Alongside my full time employment I am currently working alongside another designer and the Clickstart project leader to assist in the redesign of the Clickstart accessible web portal platform developed for service users with special needs. This I am doing voluntarily to hone my user experience skills. More details to follow.

In order to support myself during my studies I have produced websites for a number of clients. These sites utilise XHTML, CSS coding. MySQL and PHP for backend databases. My skills are expanding all of the time and I will continue producing the occasional website as and when an opportunity arrises.

After performing well on a database module in my first semester of 2009 my tutor requested I assist in her next module as a technical demonstrator. This role involves supporting tutors during workshops, answering technical questions regarding the software being used and generally making myself useful.I have found I really enjoy helping students with their assignments, being one myself I understand what they are going through so can empathise with them. At the beginning of 2009 I did a work placement at a local comprehensive school organised through my university. During my placement I was required to support ICT teachers during their lessons. I had a great deal of success working one to one with several year 11 students and helped raise the standard of the coursework they were producing by explaining the requirements to them in detail. My time at Aid My Pc awakened a deep interest in computers and I taught myself a number of computer repair skills to aid the stores technician with his workload. I was the only native English speaker working at the store (including the management). This meant that I was regularly required to liaise with customers providing quotes and explaining difficult computer problems, adapting my technique depending on their I.T literacy. I also had to learn the fundamentals of web design and publishing in order to have constructive dialog with our web designers regarding the launch of the new company website. This involved attending trade-shows/ networking events and creating advertisements for the yellow pages and local business guides. I also had to learn the fundamentals of web design and publishing in order to have constructive dialog with our web designers regarding the launch of the new company website. With these newfound skills I designed, produced and distributed the Keylogo e-newsletter to all our customers. I also helped make the office more efficient by using my database experience to monitor inbound sales leads and reporting back to my manager. On one occasion I was required to organise the logistics for a large delivery, sorting the correct goods for over a dozen locations, labelling up over a hundred medium sized boxes and assisting the van driver on the day to ensure safe delivery. Whilst at MRB insurance I became adept at developing a dialog with customers and persuading them to speak to our sales team. I was always in the top two for the number of transfers to the sales floor.

During my time as an operator I quickly progressed through the companies grading system onto the more difficult accounts. I regularly took over a hundred calls a day and had the fastest call resolution rate. As I had to take down callers details during a live call being a fast typist was essential for the role. Whilst in this employment I gained a calm confident telephone manner and learnt how to deal with difficult members of the public.

When I started at Message Pad I always finished my assigned tasks early and asked for more to do. This caused me to quickly rise from post room boy to become a key member of the helpdesk team. Upon my promotion I trained and supervised a team of two post room staff. With their help I increased the output of the direct marketing literature we distributed on behalf of our clients. I helped e7 Arts by producing their newsletter. I also produced posters to promote upcoming events the group were holding. Due to my articulate and upbeat nature I was asked to go on local radio with the group leader to promote the group. I was also tasked with researching and producing a marketing strategy for the group. Despite only volunteering for a short amount of time the group asked me to sit in on an interview panel for a youth coordinator.
