Starting in the shipping industry in 1999 the journey so far has been full of challenges, learning and progression. Conceptually the operation of moving containers though ports and inland hasn’t changed greatly, but the scale and manner to which these feats are achieved have. Starting from manual processing of information we now have multiple integrated company systems that perform automotive tasks in sync with each other to ‘churn the wheel’ of the physical operation being performed. As Shipping lines Vessels have increased in size to suit demand, I remember the MSC Pamela breaking the work record at 8000teu, now we have 16000teu monsters with bigger ones coming, forcing Ports to up their productivity, build large quays walls and investing in bigger gantry cranes and equipment. Pressing the Rail companies to invest in trains and more wagons. Haulage planning has been reinvented to maximum efficiency with minimal loss, all this to deadlines that have little contingency and significant cost. This demanding environment is all dependant of speed and access of critical information using recognised methods whilst always adjusting to newer evolving IT techniques and platforms which in turn are opening our eyes to what is now possible. Being in the middle of all this, implementing the changes internally and externally, collaborating with colleagues, understanding the benefits and drawbacks each change has is what drives me forward. The era we work in demands it, standing still is a backwards option!The scope the two companies I work for has given a huge insight to the bigger picture. Knowledge and experience of Shipping Lines, Customs, Port Health, Terminals, Rail & Haulage operations, Vessel Planning, Warehousing, Forwarders, Hazardous to name a few, always appreciating the balance of the commercial aspects with the operational requirements to hopefully provide a positive, in-depth, responsible, constructive and overall valuable addition to any endeavour undertaken.
