ArchivistReno Project Oct 2013 - PresentUnited StatesI research and archive everything related to the Lucasfilm’s Habitat virtual world service and all of their successors which include Club Caribe on Quantum Link (who later became AOL), Fujitsu Habitat on NiftyServe, Fujitsu WorldsAway and many more.I search for materials and collate them online in one place, preserving them in their original formats whilst making them more widely available for the general public and fellow researchers. I also provide context to the materials in the form of breaking things down on the site wiki and creating accompanying blog posts to shine a light on the materials. In the decade plus I’ve been working in this role I’ve also had the pleasure of talking with many of the people who worked on these projects and interviewed them for posterity. They in turn have entrusted me with further research material which I’ve shared on the site where appropriate. In this role I’ve also contributed a lot of work to the NeoHabitat project, an effort led by Randy Farmer, one of the co creators of Habitat. I was responsible for most of the work in restoring the Habitat world to match how it was back in 1988, as well as discovering VHS footage taken at the time and digitising content from that footage and reimplementing it into NeoHabitat.I’m passionate about video game preservation and have a long history in the field dating back to 2001.

ContributorNeohabitat.Org Jan 2017 - PresentPopulopolis, New Marin, HabitatLucasfilm's Habitat was the first MMO/Virtual World in existence. Originally available on the Commodore 64 as Habitat and then later shipping as Club Caribe on the Quantum Link online service. The NeoHabitat Project is an open source project headed by members of the original Lucasfilm team to restore Habitat. Taking the original server source code originally written in PL/1 and designed to run on Stratus machines, then rewriting it to run on modern systems. The client build environment has also been revived and a custom launcher was written just for NeoHabitat.I've been involved with testing, planning, world design, restoration and helping to document the history and heritage of the place. One of my proudest achievements was working with a fellow contributor in order to extract the contents of an old database backup and restoring the world as it was circa 1988.Both the code and a pre-made bundle to access the world are available at http://www.neohabitat.org

Systems AdministratorDot8,Inc Feb 2013 - Nov 2013Greater New York City AreaI was responsible for all operational aspects of the VZones virtual world services licensed from Fujitsu and provided by Dot8,Inc.My time was split between general server maintenance on the Solaris OS and hardware, future development, cataloguing and archiving assets, processing new artwork to be used, coding new client updates and being on call if the need ever arose. When I started in this role, there was an urgent need to migrate from the data center the service was being hosted at and the previous technician hadn’t known how to do this. So my first job was to back everything up and ensure a clean migration with minimal downtime for users. This went swimmingly.I had also inherited a service that had been poorly maintained, with many issues that caused random crashes. One of my main achievements in this role was identifying the sources of the crashes, correcting them and actively maintaining the services so that this didn’t happen again. Under my tenure, crashes were few and far between and there was minimal downtime.
