  • Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems
Product Owner - Drone Pilot And Mission Software
Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems Feb 2010 - Mar 2015
    Falls Church, Va, Us
During my rapid advancement at Northrop Grumman, I worked on each stage of the product lifecycle. I began in product training and documentation, then moved on to production and testing, and reached the role of Software Product Owner. The depth and breadth of exposure I gained from those roles gave me a unique talent for building outstanding UX into the products, from cradle to grave. I served as agile Product Owner for the ground control station: a suite of interconnected rich web applications that enable intelligence exchange with, and control of, the world’s most capable surveillance drone (aka UAV), the Global Hawk. Taking things a step further, we designed the system to work with any and all unmanned aircraft platforms - the Multi-Platform Mission Control Station.Staying connected to the users ensured we could achieve their intensive needs with real-time data applications. Balancing UX goals for the pilots with the needs of all other stakeholders helped us correctly integrate with the rest of the system, while adhering to rigorous security and safety standards.Highlighted Accomplishments:- I led a team of 3 Product Owners and 1 UX designer, as well as numerous cross-functional collaborators.- I recruited and built a team from 2 to 8 engineers in 5 months.- Established a methodology for iterative user research and rapid UI design that integrated the UX team into the agile rhythm and accelerated UI design completion time from four weeks to two weeks.- Upon promotion to the role, I devised and executed a plan to optimize test team processes that realized a 30% improvement to historical cost.- I developed an automated test tool to increase test coverage from 60% to 100% and designed a test case management tool that reduced average testing time by 66%.- I led a one-year $600K project to execute a rare First Flight test of drone/UAV pilot software. All test objectives completed on schedule and under budget.
  • Us Navy Reserve
    Product Tester & Mission Commander
    Us Navy Reserve 2009 - 2009
    Norfolk, Va, Us
Upon entering the Navy Reserves I was awarded a special assignment to participate in a new technology demonstration program. The Navy was testing the operational feasibility of Northrop Grumman’s Global Hawk unmanned aircraft. I was immediately fascinated by the incredible capabilities of the drones, as compared to traditional manned aircraft. I also quickly realized the ground control station seemed to be designed “by engineers, for engineers,” at the expense of the end user experience. I focused my efforts on building a team to improve UX and thereby improve mission effectiveness. We successfully prototyped and tested GUI upgrades and new features, standardized best practice operator procedures, and established a training program - all of which achieved improved mission effectiveness metrics.
