I was the assistant of Prof. Xin Tu at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronics. I was assigned to the project entitled "Non-thermal plasma decomposition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs): Understanding the reaction pathways and mechanisms". The objective of the project was to investigate the energetic processing of PAHs and related species driven by non-thermal plasmas and to gain in-depth insight into the reaction mechanisms and pathways of the plasma processing through experiment and plasma simulation approaches. Plasma diagnostics were used to understand the formation of a range of reactive species and their roles in the decomposition of PAHs.The group was equipped with state-of-the-art plasma diagnostic (e.g. Langmuir probes, time-resolved optical imaging and optical emission spectroscopy, and time resolved mass spectroscopy) and analytic facilities (e.g., GC, FTIR, and GC-MS) for plasma diagnostics and monitoring of gas/liquid products of plasma processes. The team was well equipped to deal with the multidisciplinary nature of plasma science and engineering.

As a trainee at The Land Resources Unit of the Sustainable Resources Directorate, I supported the Raw Materials Project, i.e., a project that provides science-based policy support in relation to the sustainable and secure supply of raw materials to the EU; both primary materials from extraction or harvesting and secondary materials from e.g. recycling.The project was implemented by a multi-disciplinary team addressing social, environmental, and economic considerations at EU and global scales.Key support activities included inputs to the development of the Raw Materials Information System (http://rmis.jrc.ec.europa.eu/) and the drafting of technical documents on the RMIS development progresses.
