    As a postdoctoral researcher at NICHD/NIH I looked into sensory information processing in the brain using animal experiments and computational modeling.I studied olfactory circuits and behavior in the locust, a simple and robust model animal. To record and analyze animal behavior in complex environments over long time-spans, I developed the Argos toolkit (https://github.com/subhacom/argos) for tracking animals in videos (Ray and Stopfer, 2021, https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/2041-210X.13776).Insects have fewer neurons than vertebrates, making them relatively tractable model system for rigorous investigation of neuronal circuits. I carried out electrophysiological recording of neuronal activity in awake locust brain while stimulating the animal with odors. I filled the recorded neurons with dyes, captured their images in 3D using confocal microscopy, and reconstructed their morphology from these images. I used this data to model the neural circuit responsible for olfactory information processing in the insect brain. Simulations of this model generated several hypotheses which we could test empirically (Ray, Aldworth and Stopfer, 2020, https://elifesciences.org/articles/53281) .

    In this bridging position I developed a compact data format named NSDF based on HDF5 file format for curating and sharing large datasets from neuronal simulations (Ray, Chintaluri, Bhalla and Wijcik, 2016, Neuroinformatics). I also developed a library to provide a simple interface for storing data in NSDF format from Python-based simulation scripts, and added C++ classes in MOOSE to allow continuously saving data in this format at simulation runtime.
