Subhasree Sarkar Email and Phone Number
Subhasree is a researcher in the Department of Chemical & Materials Engineering. Also, a part of Waste & Resource Recovery Research Group (WaRe3) at the University of Auckland. Her current research work evaluates the processing methods to liberate naturally available pharmaceutical grade calcium carbonate and/or nano-crystalline hydroxyapatite from low-value waste bivalve mussel/oyster shells. Her research interest also includes the development of reusable and sustainable catalysts using inexpensive transition metal oxides for organic waste treatment. Her project involves the design of novel plasma-spray coated catalysts used for catalytic wet oxidation (CWO) of organic waste. This successful work ensures the minimised leaching of active metals into the waste streams including production of value-added products alongside reducing reaction severity. She has published numerous scholarly articles in internationally renowned journals in the fields of both Chemical and Materials Engineering.

Research FellowThe University Of Auckland Feb 2023 - Mar 2024Auckland, New ZealandEntire research work completed single-handedly and delivered a commercial-grade product in collaboration with Moana NZ & Callaghan Innovation within a tight deadline of one year.Writing a thorough literature review on all the previous work done on processing bivalve shells.Hands-on experimental work, all qualitative and quantitative analysis, designed and performed all by oneself.Successfully extracted high purity (~99%, Ph. Eur.) calcium carbonate from waste mussel & oyster shells using wet oxidation technology in a high-pressure & high-temperature hydrothermal reactor.Delivered synthesised hydroxyapatite & calcium citrate from the recovered pharmaceutical-grade calcium carbonate powder in the dedicated timeline and took it to the next pilot production stage.Reduced experimental cost by replacing oxygen with air as an oxidant using energy and/or mass balance theories, making the entire project more economical.Writing regular detailed reports & weekly presentations for project update meetings with industry stakeholders.Writing SOPs for high-temperature & high-pressure hydrothermal reactors and running multiple chemical reactors single-handedly and/or unassisted for the project.Develop project plans and train numerous masters and doctoral researchers for individual or group projects, high-risk equipment handling, and statistical data analysis.Judging multiple poster and presentation sessions for the University of Auckland CHEMMAT Department Symposium & CHEMECA Conference 2023, Auckland, NZ. -
Graduate Teaching AssistantThe University Of Auckland Sep 2018 - Feb 2024Auckland, New ZealandTeam player in preparing study materials, exam invigilation & marking.Teaching courses - Fundamentals of Engineering in Society, Materials Science, Process Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Processing and Performance, and Advanced Food Process Engineering -
Doctoral ResearcherThe University Of Auckland Apr 2018 - Aug 2022Auckland, New ZealandDeveloped novel, reusable & sustainable plasma-spray coated catalysts for catalytic wet oxidation treatment of organic waste in collaboration with Holster NZ.Writing a detailed literature review for the last 60 years of research in the catalytic wet oxidation field.Designed a fixed catalytic system for maximum output and achieved the best results using minimum and/or inexpensive resources.Reusable bespoke catalysts with excellent performance managed to reduce the reaction temperature by 50 °C compared to noncatalytic reactions with drastic improvement in reaction rate.Extracted high-value VFAs as by-products in high percentage, with maximum degradation of waste materials and conversion of organics into carbon dioxide.Single-handedly designed and performed all experimental work, along with all qualitative & quantitative sample analysis and statistical data analysis. Unassisted high-pressure and high-temperature reactor operator with extraordinary performance skills.Writing SOPs for different analytical equipments for process research and materials laboratories.Writing research proposals for research funding and biweekly presentations for project update meetings.Published 5 journal articles as the first author for the project in internationally recognised journals and an outstanding dissertation for PhD defense. -
Research FellowshipInstitute Of Processing And Applications Of Inorganic Materials, Hanseo University Sep 2013 - Feb 2016Seosan, South Chungcheong, South KoreaDeveloped inexpensive silicon carbide, zirconium titanate, and silicon dioxide-based ceramic processed materials for diesel particulate filters used in cars.Studied reaction chemistry of inexpensive ceramic oxide materials with the addition of surfactants of different chain lengths and implemented direct foaming technology to fabricate porous ceramic materials.Successful Silicon carbide-based porous ceramic product developed with very high mechanical strength and negligible inclusions in record deadline.Published 10 research articles as first author in internationally recognised journals.Degradation of plastic materials was studied, mainly PLA linings in different food packaging materials in different reaction media under various reaction conditions.Reaction analysis performed with destruction of packaging materials completed successfully.Project deadline was met in a record timeline with successful supervision and training of students across the laboratory.Highly skilled performance with solo project handling capability achieved.
