About Subitha Baghirathan

My achievements include passing exam to qualify for MENSA membership Jan 2022; being one of the 2019 Bristol Post's list of "100 most inspiring women in the West" for my activism on dementia relating to people of South Asian & Caribbean heritage- and a published author in 2012. See Tangent Books website for my book- " The Colours of Sand". In my professional life, I have worked as a race and gender equality Development Officer for over 15 years. Since 2014, I shifted focus to tackling stigmas around dementia, ensuring often unheard, older people of South Asian and Caribbean origins living with health inequalities, are given attention. The opportunity to work as a Research Assoc. at UWE, taking the lead to improve awareness in this area, as well as gain new skills and experience in a fresh sector was valuable. I currently work in the field of health improvement , opening up Physical Activity opportunities for groups that do the least PA in England- e.g. South Asian and Black women- as well as trying to increase the numbers of people from these groups trained and working as Instructors of PA.I enjoy personal and professional development, with a wide range of academic and vocational qualifications gained both in full-time education and whilst working. My work experience has been developed in Bristol's voluntary and community sector, carrying out training, community consultation and strategic representation at city-wide fora. My paralegal studies benefitted my post as Lead Monitoring Officer at Avon and Bristol Law Centre. At UWE Bristol, I learned about research methods and practices. I trained as a Facilitator on the NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme in 2018.I participate enthusiastically- if slowly- in half-marathons twice a year, and prioritise regular time to my Buddhist practice, yoga and writing. My poetry has been published by Poetry Space, The Great Margins and other e--publications.
